Despite the restrictions placed on their use of the internet, the boys still manage to find more to interest them on their PC’s and cell phones.

Rather than sitting down and ploughing their way through the books we drew through the Library before we were locked down. Let alone the Year 7 Maths they will need to get through their GCSE’s. It’s going to be a steep hill they have to climb just to catch up. But that is for me to worry about.

School admissions are handled by the local council. When I phoned I was politely directed to the Council web site where you are supposed to be able to find all the information that is required. But in practice it doesn’t quite work out as well as it should. I was still left bewildered and overwhelmed.

Deciding what does and what doesn’t get recycled gets complicated. Different rules apply in different areas and if you are not sure, best to bin it as general waste. What you do recycle should be clean, dry and loose. Don’t mix different items, putting one in another.

Havant Council accept the following items:

Plastic bottles – cool drinks, milk, shampoo and cleaning product bottles. Lids and labels are not a problem but they should be empty and clean. They should also be squashed before replacing the lid. No spray or pump dispensers. What about bottles with drinking spouts?

Cardboard – Unlaminated cards, toilet and kitchen roll tubes, cereal packets and boxes. Wrapping tape and staples should be removed and larger boxes torn into smaller sizes. Wet and food soiled cardboad should not go into the bin. Food and drink cartons go into general waste.

Paper – Newspaper, magazines, junk mail, catalogues and envelopes including window envelopes. But not wet, soiled, shredded or laminated paper, gift wrapping, tissues, paper towels or photographs.

Cans – Drink and food cans, sweets and biscuit tins that have been rinsed clean.

Aerosols – Empty aerosols such as deodorant and air freshener sprays. But not camping gas canisters or aerosols with a hazard symbol (an orange and black skull and crossbones). For example oven cleaner. The containers should not be pierced or squashed and no plastic lids.

[Edit] Thai & Asian Foodmart has closed. But have found Snooki’s Thai Market and sometimes use Thai Spice in Fareham. For restaurants we frequent Saro’s in Portsmouth (good streetfood) and have not got around to trying Na’s Bar & Grill at Kemps Quay Southampton or Agaligo on Hayling.

Yesterdays breakfast. Khao khluk kapi. Homemade Thai food at it’s very best.

My meal of choice at Robinsons food hall in Kanchanaburi. Not to be found on the menu at any of the local Thai restaurants.

But most of the ingredients can be found at the Thai & Asian Foodmart in Fratton. Almost as good as any country village market.

Fresh sweet finger banannas, kaphrao, sataw and green papaya. All at a price. But that is to be expected and if you close your eyes, its painless.

They even import Birdy coffee and the Mogu Mogu fruit juice drinks containing cubes of chewy, jelly-like nata de coco made from flavorful bites of young coconut.

Good coffee, the morning newspaper, a warm croissant and blackcurrant jam.

Chocolate cake with either coffee or afternoon tea

And hot buttered cheese scones anytime.

They also offer a light lunch menu which besides sandwiches and toasties, includes soups, quiche, salads , jacket potatoes, a ploughmans platter and Welsh rarebit.
