Emsworth

Its is unnecessarily frustrating trying to get a prescription from the local surgery.

My first line of attack was to log in to the site.  This takes one onto System Online where I request my monthly meds. There is also an option to ‘Make a Custom Request’.

So I did.

A week later I received a text message requesting me to use Econsult. After clicking the EConsult tab and wading through a lengthy questionaire on WebGP.com it politely advised me that the Emsworth Surgery does not support EConsultations.

Prompting me to phone Reception.

Only to be advised to return to the website and select the EConsult Prescription Request in the body of the page. Which once again requires a series of questions and a choice of selecting ‘Continue with NHS Login’ or to ‘Continue without logging in’. Despite not having my NHS # to hand I made the mistake of trying the short-cut, by logging in.

This took me to the NHS site where I was cross questioned, for ‘security purposes’,  and asked to upload a copy of my passport photo. After which I was required to recite four randomly generated numbers whilst glaring angrily at myself on camera.

Only to be informed it will take at least 24 hrs to decide whether I am who I am.

So it was back to where it all started, opting for ‘Continue without logging in’ this time and more questions. Constantly being reminded that the route I am on is used for ‘administrative requests’ only.

I not really that familiar with Indian restaurants but I believe that Darbar is one of the better choices that one is going to find on this part of the the South Coast.

I am a lot more comfortable with Thai food.  Indian curries are not as robust and are a lot less spicy. Despite this I have thoroughly enjoyed the couple of meals I have had at Darbar in Emsworth. Together with its sister restaurant Thyme & Chilli I have no doubt that they rank among the best Indian restaurants in and around West Sussex and Hampshire.

I was introduced to it after I stopped at Thyme & Chillies on the way to West Wittering in Chichester Harbour. Run by the same owners, I was assured by a particularly friendly and enthusiastic waitron, that they only prepare authentic Indian cuisine and I have no reason to doubt his word.

But it was the Indian rice pudding I found on the menu at Darbar that I go back for. Its something I used to order many years ago in a small Indian restaurant in Corlett Drive in Johannesburg. Not quite what I recall. But it still brought back fond memories.

I keep a bicycle at the Chichester station which I use to cycle to work at the factory.

A routine which gets complicated when one finds that the tire that should have been replaced months ago, has finally burst and is not going anywhere. Except onto the train and back to Emsworth Cycles.

Didn’t think twice about it.

The first time I used them was after buying a couple of bikes off the net,  for a colleague at work. One of them needed new brake pads as well as a service so I took it in and left it with them.

But collected it the next day as my friend had decided he would service it himself. I apologised profusely for messing them around. But the lad I was dealing with, assured me it wasn’t a problem and undertook to keep our card in the queue. Saying he would phone me when it was next in line, just to check if there had been a change in plan.

This he did.

And whilst we didn’t need it at the time, it was a gesture, the sort of customer service which is rare to find.

One of the most popular walks in Emsworth is the trail that runs along the foreshore from Emsworth to Langstone.

From the Harbour, walk along the sea wall past the Emsworth Sailing Club, onto a concrete path and the foreshore.

It is an 8km walk along shoreline paths with the option of an inland section passing through an attractive area of woodland, the Nore Barn Woods

As well as past the Warblington church which dates back to the Saxon era. Some of the original architecture has survived but it was largely rebuilt in the 13th Century . There are two unusual ‘gravewatchers’ huts’ in the churchyard. Also known as the Coffin walk it was the route that people took with coffins for burials before the church in Emsworth was built.

There is no shortage of benches along the route route, offering one the opportunity to stop, relax and enjoy the view. One can see the remains of Warblington Castle which is not open to the public. It was built in the 16th century and was taken in the Civil War and destroyed by the Parliamentarians, leaving only the one tower.

The path skirts the Mill pond at Langstone with the old mill on the left, past the Royal Oak and onto The Ship.

The Wadeway On the shoreline at the end of Langstones High Street, are the remains of a hardened causeway which originally crossed the channel linking the mainland to Hayling Island at low tide. Written references to the Wadeway date back to 1552 and refer to a toll for crossing the causeway. However, carbon dating dates it to early Medieval times. In 1821 the causeway was severed by ‘New Cut’ which was part of the construction of the Portsmouth to Arundel canal making the Wadeway unusable.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy

Situated on the historic picturesque Mill Pond and a short stroll from Emsworth’s quaint harbor and walks along the shoreline .

Compass cottage is a restored Victorian cottage with a steep staircase and a cosy working fireplace.

There are two double bedrooms on the first floor . The master bedroom has a comfy king size bed which looks out across the Mill Pond

While with the second bedroom overlooks the garden and can be made up as a king or twin room.

The well equipped kitchen provides everything needed to make the most of the delicious fresh produce available from local farm shops, butchers and fishmongers.
